Rare Large 1980s Postmodern Memphis Style Chest Storage Box by Hollis Fingold
This wonderful piece created and signed by Hollis Fingold, epitomizes the whimsy and fun of the 1980s & Memphis Milano style. Hand painted by the artist in airbrush and brush stippling, her pieces command acclaim as they are equal parts beautiful and functional. This example is particularly rare as it is in a larger scale seldomly seen in her work. While the vast majority of her pieces are small, table-top jewelry boxes, this piece would be better described as a blanket chest and stands over 30 inches tall! If you are a fan of Fingold's work you will have a hard time finding a more substantial representation than this!
Hollis Fingold exhibited her first commercial pieces at a show in NYC in 1985. She was well known in the 1980s and 1990s for her functional art. Her influence on the functional art movement in the 1980s can still be seen today. In 1986, Radar Design Inc. in Denver, Colorado began under her supervision producing her limited edition work with showrooms in NYC, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Chicago and Switzerland. Her was sold widely in department stores, galleries and museum stores from China to Hollywood. Her telephones, boxes and furniture were seen on television shows and motion pictures, as well as, commercials, catalogs and Disneyworld, Bloomingdales and Los Angeles’s MOCA and many other locations.
